Horizon Choir Brings New Youth Chorus to Western Nevada County

If there’s one thing Nevada County does best, it’s coming together as a community—whether it’s at the fair, out on the trails, or gathered for music and art. For me, that sense of connection started young. From 4th through 8th grade, I sang in the choir at Union Hill, and later, during high school, I joined the Center for the Arts singing program back in 2012–2013.

Those experiences shaped me in ways I still carry today—confidence, friendships, and the joy of creating something bigger than myself. That’s why I’m so excited about the launch of The Nevada County School of the Arts (NCSA) new Horizon Choir in Western Nevada County – an inclusive youth chorus that kicks off this September.

This isn’t your typical “you have to audition and cross your fingers” choir. Horizon Choir is all about access, creativity, and connection. No auditions required—just enthusiasm, a love of music, and the courage to raise your voice.

Why Horizon Choir Matters

This isn’t just about teaching kids how to sing—it’s about giving them a safe, supportive space to grow. Ariel May brings not just professional expertise but also a vision for choir as a place where kids build confidence, empathy, and teamwork.

As May puts it:

“Choir is a team – everything we do, we do together. … more than just music; it’s about building confidence, cultivating empathy, and discovering joy through shared artistic expression.”

For families, this means your child gets more than music lessons—they get to be part of a community, create lasting friendships, and discover joy through creativity.

With screen time at an all-time high, giving kids opportunities to unplug, connect, and express themselves is invaluable. Choir is not only an outlet for creativity, but it’s also proven to boost mental health, academic performance, and social skills. Plus, how cool will it be for parents to watch their kids perform in a group led by someone who has taken music to some of the world’s biggest stages?

Being part of choir gave me confidence, lifelong friends, and a love for music that I carry with me even now. Knowing that the Horizon Choir is offering that same opportunity to Nevada County students today makes my heart so happy. If your child is in grades 4–8, this is your chance to let them shine—no auditions, just music, community, and the kind of memories they’ll treasure forever.
