When people talk about Nevada County’s economy, the conversation almost always circles back to tourism. Sure, being the birthplace of the Gold Rush naturally makes us a travel destination, but relying on tourists as our economic backbone isn’t exactly a recipe for long-term stability. If we want to future-proof this county and make it a better place for the people who actually live here, we need to think bigger. And smarter.
Here are some ideas that could help grow our economy without the need for constant tourists.

Reopen or Modernize Mining—Responsibly
Our mining history is part of what put Nevada County on the map, but modern technology could give it a fresh, sustainable twist. Instead of the old destructive methods, small-scale, eco-conscious mining could focus on extracting rare earth elements and minerals like lithium, which are in high demand for electric vehicles and batteries. This could bring in new jobs while keeping environmental impact in check. A modern mining hub that emphasizes innovation (instead of tourist attractions) could also draw research partnerships and state funding.
Embrace Our Historical Significance (Without the Souvenir Shops)
Our history is fascinating, and it deserves to be preserved in meaningful ways. Instead of over-commercializing it, Nevada County could lean into projects like historical research centers, digital archives, and partnerships with universities. We could create jobs for historians, educators, and documentarians while keeping the focus on authenticity, not just Instagram-friendly photo ops. This is about honoring the past while using it to inspire new opportunities.

Workforce Development in Skilled Trades
The demand for skilled trades—welding, carpentry, electrical work—has never been higher. Nevada County could partner with Sierra College or other programs to offer apprenticeships and certifications in renewable energy installation, wildfire prevention work, and historic building restoration. Not only would this create jobs, but it would also keep critical skills within the community.
Tech & Remote Work Infrastructure
Let’s face it—remote work is here to stay. By expanding high-speed fiber internet across the county, we could attract remote workers and small tech startups looking for a quieter, more affordable place to live. Converting unused commercial spaces into coworking hubs or incubators could encourage local entrepreneurship, which means more money staying in Nevada County instead of flowing to the Bay Area.

Support Local Agriculture & Food Production
We already have some amazing farms, but there’s room to grow (pun intended). Nevada County could invest in processing facilities to turn local produce into packaged goods like apple cider, preserves, or even hemp-based products. Specialty crops like lavender or wine grapes could also thrive here, and community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs could create steady income for local farmers.

Nevada County doesn’t have to depend on out-of-town dollars to thrive. By focusing on skilled trade education, modern mining industries, and other local attributes, we can build an economy that’s resilient, and uniquely ours. Forget the tourist brochure—it’s time the community worked together for the long haul.
