Summer at the Library: Where Boredom Goes to Die

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably said the words “go read a book” at least five times before lunch now that school’s out. But what if I told you there’s a place in town offering free crafts, storytimes, movie nights, Dungeons & Dragons, AND prizes for reading—without you having to play the entertainment committee every single day?

Enter: The Nevada County Library’s Summer Learning Program—also known in our house as the MVP of summer survival.

Color Our World: Summer Learning Challenge

Running from June 14 to August 8, this year’s program is all about creativity, exploration, and yes—prizes! Kids and teens ages 0–18 can participate by tracking their reading and completing fun activities.

Here’s how to join:

Sign up digitally here or download the Beanstack Tracker app and search “Nevada County Library”

Prefer the old-school route? Grab a paper log from any library branch

Track your progress and unlock digital badges, enter into prize drawings, and snag bragging rights for being a bookworm with flair

Weekly Events That Actually Make Leaving the House Worth It

These aren’t your typical library vibes. This summer, the library is stacked with weekly fun for every age group.

Crafternoon & Build-Make-Play

Nerd Squad: Dungeons & Dragons

Held every Friday at the Grass Valley Library for ages 12–18—because what’s summer without a little fantasy campaign?

Ukulele Classes

Music lovers (ages 16+) can learn the uke for free at Madelyn Helling.
And if that doesn’t earn you “cool parent” points, I don’t know what will.

Where to Find More Information

The county keeps things organized (thank goodness), so here’s where to stay updated:

Beanstack Sign-Up
Get started with tracking, challenges, and rewards

These library programs aren’t just about keeping the kids busy (though bless them for that). They build confidence, creativity, and community—and give us grownups a much-needed breather while knowing our kids are engaged in something meaningful.

So whether you’re chasing toddlers or guiding tweens through a tech-free summer (good luck), the library is here to help you keep your sanity… and maybe even spark some new interests.

And hey—forward this post to a fellow parent who needs a break!
