Spring is in the air in Nevada County. This is a season that beckons all to declutter, refresh, and maybe even add a little “spark” to your cleaning routine (safely, of course). To help wake up your urge to tidy up, here are some smart, practical, and environmentally friendly spring cleaning tips for Nevada County and beyond!
Declutter with Purpose
Begin by sorting through your belongings. Whether it’s furniture that’s seen better days, tools gathering dust in the garage, or housewares you no longer use, decluttering is the first step toward a fresher home. Not only does a tidier space create room for new possibilities, but it also makes cleaning a breeze!
Pro-Tip:
As you tidy up, create three designated piles: one for items to keep, another for donations, and a third for trash. I typically use a plastic tote for the “keep” items, a cardboard box for donations, and a large trash can for what needs to be discarded. This organization allows me to efficiently finish each room—once I’m done, I can easily load the donation box into my car, empty the trash can, and if I’m not ready to find new homes for the items I’m keeping, at least they won’t clutter my space.

Burn Wisely and Responsibly
For those planning to dispose of yard waste by burning, safety is paramount. Nevada County residents should always check the burn day status before lighting a fire. The Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District updates this status daily—so before you spark up your burn pile, give them a ring.
Remember
Always call before lighting a burn pile.
Aim to burn between 9 A.M. and 3 P.M. for optimal smoke dispersion.
Burn only dry, natural vegetation that grew on your property.
(No garbage, construction debris, or treated materials)
Burning is always prohibited within the city limits of Grass Valley and Nevada City.
Taking these precautions not only ensures compliance with local regulations but also helps maintain the quality of our clean mountain air.
Donate & Give Items a Second Life
There are many local non-profits that accept donations of used goods but my personal favorites are:
Nevada County Habitat for Humanity: ReStore
They accept gently used furniture, tools, housewares, lumber, flooring, gardening supplies, building materials, lighting and so much more! Clear out your space and support a local initiative that builds safe, affordable homes for community members in need. Currently, Nevada County Habitat has given homes to more than 38 local families.
The best part? If you have large items, they offer a convenient pick‐up service—just call and schedule a pickup to make your donation hassle-free.
All donations are eligible for use as a tax deduction. Just ask for a receipt when donating.
