Let’s face it — juggling house work and a baby can sometimes feel like mission impossible. Babies need constant care and attention and that need doesn’t magically disappear when the dishes pile up or the laundry needs to be done. Add in older siblings with their own needs and you officially can claim the title of “chaos coordinator extraordinaire”.
As a mother of three, I’ve had to learn how to keep my little ones entertained in order to accomplish getting just about anything done. There was plenty of trial and error that went into finding just the right things to keep baby entertained for long enough and wouldn’t you know, every one of my kids liked something different from the last. (So much for saving money by keeping all the toys and gear from the first one.)
At first, it will probably be a bit stressful while you try to find your baby’s “thing” but don’t worry — it won’t be long before you can keep your little one entertained while knocking out your to-do list.
So without further delay, here’s my list of tried-and-true ways to entertain your baby:
Entertaining Baby
Musical Distraction
Babies love music! Soft, gentle tunes can be incredibly calming. Create a playlist of lullabies, classical music or peaceful instrumental music to play while you work or clean.
(Pro-Tip: Movie soundtracks will keep babies entertained for longer due to the changing pace of the songs)
Mobile
Hang a mobile above your baby’s crib or play area. The movement and bright colors will capture their attention and keep them entertained for some time.

Brightly Colored Objects
Babies are naturally drawn to vibrant colors and interesting shapes. Lay out a few brightly colored toys or safe household items for visual stimulation.
(Pro-Tip: Silicone kitchen utensils or large, non-toxic building blocks are perfect to use and easy to clean up!)

Exercise with Baby
Who says you can’t get fit and bond with your baby at the same time? Play peek-a-boo during squats, do gentle baby lifts (if they’re old enough and secure), or just stretch alongside them while talking and making silly faces.
Casserole Dish Fun
This is a clever DIY trick that can provide endless entertainment. Fill a 9×13 pan with colorful, safe objects of different shapes and textures. Babies will love moving and grabbing the items, which also helps with their motor development.
(Pro-Tip: Don’t know what to use? Sturdy foam cut-outs, bath tub toys and ball pit balls are all perfect for this activity.)
Baby Gear Recommendations
Baby Carrier
Sometimes referred to as “baby wearing,” the use of baby carriers dates back almost to the beginning of mankind. It’s simple and easy to use. Just strap your baby in and go about your business while keeping them close. Babies are soothed by the gentle swaying motion as you move, and the closeness helps them feel secure.

Swings
Baby swings are fantastic for putting babies to sleep. (My oldest daughter almost had to be put to sleep by her swing.) Even if baby stays awake, most come with variable swing speeds and melodies to play.
When using swings always follow AAP safety guidelines:
Use the most reclined position for babies 4 months and under.
Ensure the swing is sturdy and can’t tip over or fold up too easily.
Always use the provided safety straps to prevent falls.
Bouncers
Suitable from birth to around 6 months, bouncers can be used almost anywhere. Newborns sleep a lot, so make sure to supervise extra carefully when your baby is in the bouncer. The gentle bouncing motion can be very soothing.
Activity Centers
Ideal for babies 4 months and up who have solid head and neck control. Activity centers keep your little one occupied with engaging toys, sounds, and textures while you get things done.
Once you find your baby’s “thing”, keeping them entertained while you do what you need to do will be a breeze. This will help to create an environment where both you and your baby thrive. Remember, it’s all about balance and embracing these moments of chaos is just part of the journey.
Happy multitasking!
