One of the best parts of living in a small town is the balance of ridiculous to reasonable. Nowhere is this balance more openly apparent than in the local call logs. Here you’ll find everything from genuinely concerning incidents to head-scratchers that leave you wondering, “Why did they even pick up the phone?”
Romance Scam Goes South

A concerned resident reported that their mother fell victim to a Facebook romance scam. The unknown scammer sweet-talked her out of her hard-earned cash, leading to a frantic flurry of damage control. Facebook was notified and quickly deleted the scammer’s account, Adult Protective Services was notified, and the bank was contacted about the lost funds. The family even added blocks and security locks to her online accounts, but the takeaway here is clear: love may be blind, but your wallet shouldn’t be.
Goat Theft on the Rise

Someone woke up to find their goat had mysteriously disappeared overnight and promptly reported the theft. Whether this was an act of livestock larceny or a goat deciding to embark on its own adventure is unclear, but it’s safe to say goat security is something we all need to take seriously.
Restraining Order Confusion

One resident called in after being told by the CHP that the sheriff’s office had issued a restraining order against them. This one raises a lot of questions, but none more pressing than, “Why would you call the police about a restraining order the police allegedly filed against you?”
A Dog in Need of Rescue

In a heartwarming but slightly over-the-top call, a pet owner contacted 911 to report their dog had fallen down a small hill on their property. The request for assistance was promptly transferred to CalFire. While we understand the love for a furry family member, let’s hope this pup had a soft landing and didn’t need a full search-and-rescue operation
Marijuana Complaints

Finally, a caller requested police follow up about their neighbors smoking marijuana. Whether the complaint was about the smell or just old-fashioned disapproval wasn’t made clear, but in a state where marijuana is legal, this is one for the “live and let live” column. (Pro tip: maybe bring your neighbors a snack instead of filing a report!)
While some of these calls are valid and others are downright ridiculous, they’re all part of what makes Nevada County unique. Let’s take these moments as reminders: watch out for goat burglars, never send money to strangers online, and stay cautious on social media platforms.
Stay safe, stay weird, and don’t forget to feed your stoner neighbors!
