Nevada County has always had a flair for the arts — from live music echoing through downtown Nevada City to murals, makers, and film festivals that punch far above our population size. But now, that creative heartbeat is getting a serious boost.
This fall, local organizations have rolled out new film and art grant programs that aim to turn our foothill communities into a full-blown creative hub — one where filmmakers, musicians, painters, and performers can make a living doing what they love right here at home.
If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing your work on screen or getting a little help to fund your next big art project, this might be your moment.

Lights, Camera, Local Impact
The Nevada City Film Festival (NCFF) just launched its brand-new “Filmed in Nevada County” grant program, offering $1,000–$20,000 to filmmakers who choose to shoot their projects right here in the Sierra Foothills. To qualify, productions must complete at least 50% of principal photography in Nevada County, and up to two grantees will also receive mentorship from experienced local producers.
Why this matters? Every film shot here means:
Jobs for local crews and talent
Lodging and catering for local businesses
Showcasing our iconic landscapes
From Empire Mine’s stonework to the Yuba River’s wild beauty

It’s not just a grant — it’s an investment in storytelling that keeps our economy creative and community-based. You can find full details and application info through the Nevada County Arts Council’s call to artists page.
Grass Valley-Nevada City Cultural District Mini-Grants
At the same time, the Nevada County Arts Council is funding smaller but mighty opportunities through its Mini-Grant program — $1,000 for individual artists or culture bearers, and up to $5,000 for arts organizations and collaborations with budgets under $200,000.
These grants are designed to:
Expand access to the arts
Support diverse and underrepresented voices
Reduce bias in grantmaking (awarded through a qualified lottery system)
It’s part of a broader effort by Upstate California Creative Corps, a state pilot program that named Nevada County as one of 13 regional partners distributing funding to artists who use creativity to build stronger communities.
What’s happening here isn’t just “nice for the arts.” It’s economic infrastructure — a local renaissance built on imagination and inclusion.
Every mural, film shoot, and music festival draws visitors, fills hotels, boosts restaurants, and keeps money circulating inside the county instead of flowing out to the cities. More importantly, it reminds us that art isn’t just something we consume — it’s something we create together.
The next great film festival darling might just be shot along the Yuba. The next mural that moves you could appear on a wall downtown. Nevada County’s creative scene isn’t just alive — it’s thriving.
