The earliest recorded birthday celebrations date back to ancient Egypt. Pharaohs were considered gods in human form, and their coronation—the day they were “reborn” as divine rulers—was honored with feasts and offerings. Not so much “cake and candles,” but still a party in its own right.

Ancient Greece picked up the tradition, especially when it came to honoring the goddess Artemis. To pay tribute, Greeks baked round cakes (to symbolize the moon) and topped them with lit candles to mimic moonlight. Sound familiar? Romans carried birthdays into a more personal realm. They began celebrating the birth anniversaries of ordinary men (women’s birthdays weren’t officially recognized for quite some time). Fast forward to early Christianity, and birthdays were frowned upon for centuries as a pagan practice—until eventually, the celebration of Christ’s birth shifted that perspective and softened resistance.

It wasn’t until the 18th century in Germany that the modern birthday celebration really took shape. “Kinderfeste” included cakes, candles, and parties specifically for children—a tradition that spread across cultures and continents.

At the heart of it all, birthdays continue to serve the same purpose they always have: pausing to honor life, connection, and the simple joy of being together.
