Nevada City Shoots for the Stars: Dark Sky Certification Coming Soon!

Have you noticed our night skies getting brighter lately? Nevada City sure has, and we’re taking action! Our charming town is aiming to become Northern California’s first official Dark Sky Community, protecting our spectacular starry skies from increasing light pollution.

Why Dark Skies Matter

It’s not just about beautiful views—reducing light pollution helps local wildlife like bats, owls, and insects thrive. It also saves energy, enhances public safety with smarter lighting, and even boosts tourism as stargazing becomes a major attraction.

Imagine clearly seeing the Milky Way and constellations from your backyard every night!

Certification Standards

Leading the charge towards certification are Nevada City’s Planning Department, Nevada County Astronomers Club, South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL), and local businesses. Additionally, City Planner Lisa McCandless and Mayor Gary Petersen are key advocates, who are supported by enthusiastic volunteers and local environmentalists. This collective effort is truly community-driven.

Currently, the city’s new outdoor lighting ordinance is being finalized to meet strict standards from the International DarkSky Association. This ordinance requires new outdoor lights to be shielded, downward-facing, and low-glare, significantly reducing unnecessary sky glow. With community backing and careful planning, Nevada City aims for certification approval by early 2026.
