Okay, friends—this one’s for the DIY oil changers, the garage tinkerers, and basically anyone who knows their way around a funnel and a jug of 5W-30. Nevada County is bringing back its Oil Filter Exchange Event on Saturday, June 21st, and yes—it’s exactly as cool (and helpful) as it sounds.

Here’s the Deal:
On June 21st, from 10 AM to 2 PM, head over to O’Reilly Auto Parts at 742 Freeman Lane in Grass Valley. Bring in up to two used motor oil filters, and in exchange, you’ll get $15 per filter to put toward new ones. That’s $30 back in your pocket just for being responsible.
But wait—there’s more! (Said in my best infomercial voice.)
They’re also giving away a limited supply of free oil change kits. We’re talking a funnel, an oil pan, and a jug—all the gear to keep things clean and easy. Just one per household, so maybe leave the minivan full of cousins at home for this errand.
A Few Rules:
First come, first served.
Nevada County residents only.
This one’s just for us locals.
No commercial businesses.
So if you run a fleet of food trucks or have company cars,
you’ll need to sit this one out.
Vouchers and kits are while supplies last.
Get there early if you want the full haul.

Why It Matters
Used oil filters aren’t just gross—they’re little toxic time bombs if you toss them in the trash. They contain residual oil that can leak into the soil and waterways, and since we like our Yuba water clean and our gardens un-poisoned, programs like this are a big win.
The county’s really leaning into eco-friendly practices lately, and honestly? It’s kind of inspiring.
This event is funded by CalRecycle and coordinated by Nevada County’s Solid Waste Division, which means we’re not just talking sustainability—we’re doing it.

If you’ve got a used oil filter hanging out in your garage like a weird little souvenir from your last oil change—this is your sign. Cash it in, clean up your workspace, and high-five the environment while you’re at it.
