Free Fish, Fewer Bites: Nevada County’s Mosquito Fish Giveaway Is Back!

Look, I know it’s not every day you get excited about free fish. But when those fish happen to be the mosquito-munching heroes of summer? You better believe I’m here to spread the word like butter on bread.

On Wednesday, May 21st from 10AM to noon, Nevada County is hosting a free Mosquito Fish Giveaway at the Eric Rood Administrative Center (that’s 950 Maidu Avenue in Nevada City, for my fellow directionally challenged folks).

These little aquatic warriors are part of the county’s Vector Control Program, and trust me—they’re not just cute. They’re mosquito larvae annihilators, making them the perfect addition to your birdbath, trough, pond, or that old kiddie pool you forgot to drain last year (no judgment).

Here’s the deal:

It’s drive-thru only, so you don’t even have to get out of your car.
(Which is perfect because, let’s be real, some of us are living in “errand chic” these days.)

The county provides the container.

You’ll leave with a bag or bucket of fish ready to release.

Just make sure to stock them in your water feature within two hours so they stay happy and effective.

Already have larger fish in your pond?

Skip the pick-up—those big guys probably already have the larvae situation under control.

This is part of an ongoing summer effort to help prevent mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile Virus. Other upcoming giveaway dates include June 4 & 18 and July 9, so mark those calendars if May 21 doesn’t work for you.

If you can’t make any of the dates, you can even call:
The Vector Control team
530-265-1500
to schedule a fish pick-up.
Yes, that’s right—fish on demand. Living in the future has its perks.

So what’s the takeaway? It’s free. It’s easy. It’s the most low-maintenance pet you’ll ever own—and it helps keep your yard from turning into a mosquito rave. Win-win.
