Stories Behind Success: Mapu Foods

Mapu Foods is a fresh new culinary gem in Nevada City, owned and operated by Alejo Otano. Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Alejo is a 29-year-old entrepreneur and communications scientist who first came to California in 2019. After years of traveling and exploring, he chose to make Nevada County his permanent home in 2024.

One of Alejo’s favorite parts of running Mapu Foods is interacting with customers and sharing the history behind the recipes. “I love telling stories about Patagonia and Latin America as a way to debunk prejudice and connect people,” he shares.

His passion for preserving culinary heritage is embodied in one of Mapu’s standout empanadas—the Orange Glazed Pork. This unique recipe, passed down from Alejo’s grandmother, honors her legacy and brings a one-of-a-kind flavor to the local food scene.

Mapu Foods recently upgraded their empanadas, making them 50% bigger to satisfy hungry customers. Alejo laughs about the behind-the-scenes chaos, saying, “It definitely gets kinda crazy when you have to chop 40 lbs of onions all at once for a big order!”

When he’s not crafting delicious food, Alejo enjoys visiting local favorites like Heartwood Eatery for its “great vibe and awesome staff”, as well as Petra in Nevada City for its incredible flavors and ambiance.

So the next time you’re craving bold flavors and authentic Argentine-inspired dishes crafted with love, look no further than Mapu Foods.
