With my birthday just around the corner on January 5, I can’t help but feel excited. Who doesn’t love their birthday? It’s a day dedicated to celebrating you—your existence, your achievements, and simply the joy of being alive. Birthdays are quite a big deal in my book, not just for me, but for those I care about. I absolutely love helping others celebrate their birthday, in ways big and small.
On birthdays, I believe the day should be all about the birthday boy/girl. It’s their time to shine and do whatever makes them happy (within budget, of course). I always strive to make birthdays special for my loved ones, whether it’s surprising them with a sweet treat or spending the afternoon just hanging out. Birthday’s can be special without the need for big boxes with bows. It’s the thought and effort that counts, after all!
Looking back, I have some fantastic memories of my birthday celebrations. My sweet 16 stands out as one of my favorites for sure. It was a gypsy themed party featuring a late night circus kind of vibe that I co-hosted with my best friend, Sarah and Luna. We dressed up in belly shirts and skirts and invited everyone else to join in on the fun. It was an unforgettable experience filled with laughter and joy!
Last year, I celebrated my birthday in style, albeit in a different way. My husband surprised me with a weekend getaway to Stateline, Nevada, where I experienced a casino for the first time. While there a blizzard happened and we got to play in plenty of fresh snow. It was an adventurous birthday filled with excitement!

This year, however, is different. With a three-month-old baby in the house, the idea of jetting off to a swanky hotel or planning a grand party feels unrealistic. But just because I have to simplify my birthday plans doesn’t mean I can’t celebrate! There are plenty of free and low-cost birthday activities that anyone can enjoy, with or without children. Here are some of my top recommendations:
Go for a Hike
Hiking is an adventurous and fun to celebrate a birthday! This time of year is perfect for it; the weather is usually mild, making it almost impossible to overheat. Plus, it’s a great excuse to be outdoors enjoying nature. Just be sure to check the weather forecast to avoid getting caught in the rain. The photos below are from a lovely hike my husband and I took today at a trail just a mile from our house.
Cost: free, plus the gas to get to your nearest trail head!

Home Theater Movie Night
Why not create a cozy home theater experience? Transform your living room into the ultimate movie-watching spot with extra blankets and cushions to snuggle up in. Get your favorite candy and popcorn ready for a delightful movie night, complete with two or three of your favorite films. Don’t forget the drinks!
Cost: the price of candy and popcorn
Nostalgic Games
If you’re gathering with friends or just hanging out with your kids, games are great entertainment. You can teach how to play your favorite childhood games. Whether it’s board games, freeze tag, or musical chairs, it’s a fantastic way to create new memories while reminiscing about the past
Cost: nothing!.
Potluck Dinner
Invite friends and/or family over for a potluck dinner where everyone brings a dish to share. It’s a delightful way to enjoy good company and a variety of foods without the pressure of cooking everything yourself. Everyone contributes, making it a fun and budget-friendly celebration.
Cost: what you need to make your dish
DIY Spa Day
Indulge in a pampering spa experience at home! Set up a DIY spa day with face masks, soothing music, and relaxation time. You can treat yourself to manicures, pedicures, or a bubble bath for a fraction of the cost of a salon. Match it with a bottle of bubbly to get the full package. It’s a well-deserved way to celebrate you!
Cost: price of needed “spa” items and drink of choice

As I approach my birthday this year, I am filled with gratitude for the moments that make life special. While plans may change and budgets may be tight, endless options remain for celebrating the joy of another year. Birthdays should be cherished and celebrated in whatever way brings you happiness. So whether you choose to hike, host a cozy movie night, or simply enjoy the company of loved ones, embrace the day and make it all about you. Here’s to birthdays, and the memories yet to come!
