Weekend Highlights in Nevada County: Cover Crops and Canine Companions

Fall in Nevada County has its own magic. The mornings are crisp, the evenings call for sweaters, and weekends are packed with local happenings that bring our community closer together. This weekend is no exception. Two events stand out not only for their fun factor but for the way they reflect what Nevada County is all about: connection to the land and connection to each other.

Whether you’re looking to boost your garden soil or finally meet that four-legged companion you’ve been dreaming of, this Saturday has something for you. Let’s dig in (pun intended).

Free Workshop: Cover Crops 101

When: Saturday, September 27, 10:00–11:00 AM
Where: Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply, 125 Clydesdale Ct, Grass Valley
Event Page: Cover Crops 101 Workshop

Gardening in the Sierra Foothills means working with challenging soils and variable weather. Cover crops are one of the simplest and most effective tools to keep your soil thriving season after season. At this free class hosted by Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply (known to many as GrowOrganic), you’ll learn exactly how to choose, plant, and maintain cover crops.

Cover crops aren’t just “green ground cover.” They’re natural problem-solvers. They help prevent erosion on our hilly landscapes, return nutrients to the soil, and keep weeds at bay. Legumes like clover and vetch fix nitrogen, while grasses and grains improve soil structure and add organic matter. This workshop will break down which mixes are best for fall planting in our region and when to crimp or cut them to get the best results.

It’s a perfect event for beginners dipping their toes into sustainable gardening or seasoned homesteaders looking to refresh their knowledge. Plus, it’s free—a true gift for our local growing community.

Nifty Adoption Day: Canine Edition

When: Saturday, September 27, 11:00 AM–3:00 PM
Where:Sammie’s Nifty Thrift, 535 E. Main St., Grass Valley
Event Page:Nifty Adoption Day

After tending to the garden, why not tend to your heart? Sammie’s Friends is hosting their monthly Nifty Adoption Day at Sammie’s Nifty Thrift. This is one of my favorite types of community events because it gives shelter animals the chance to meet potential families outside the kennel environment. Dogs, and sometimes cats, will be available for adoption, and the friendly volunteers are there to answer all your questions about the adoption or foster-to-adopt process.

If you’ve ever thought about adoption, this is the perfect low-pressure environment to meet a pup face-to-face. You can get a sense of their personality, learn about their background, and imagine what life might look like with them by your side. And because Sammie’s Friends is deeply rooted in Nevada County, adopting here means you’re supporting local rescue efforts and helping reduce shelter overcrowding.

Pro tip: bring an ID and a pet carrier if you’re serious about adopting. You never know when you’ll meet “the one,” and it’s best to be prepared.

What I love about weekends like this is how they showcase Nevada County’s unique spirit. One event focuses on sustainable living and nurturing the land we call home. The other focuses on compassion and finding loving homes for animals in need. Together, they remind us that community is built not just through social gatherings but through the small, meaningful choices we make.

Learning about cover crops isn’t just about plants—it’s about creating healthier soil for future harvests. Adopting a dog isn’t just about bringing home a pet—it’s about creating a bond and giving a second chance. Both choices ripple outward into our neighborhoods, families, and ecosystems.

So, what’s on your weekend agenda? Whether you’re grabbing your garden gloves or heading to town to meet adoptable pups, Nevada County has you covered. These events are free, local, and packed with opportunities to connect—either to the earth beneath your feet or to a new best friend wagging their tail at you.
