What to Pack for a Day at the Yuba River: Essentials For Every River Adventure

If you live in or around Nevada County, chances are the Yuba River is one of your go-to spots for summer adventuring (or just to beat the heat). Whether you’re heading to the ever-popular Bridgeport, looking for a quieter spot off Edwards Crossing, or braving the crowds (and potential nudists) at Purdon, one thing’s for sure—you want to be prepared.

A river day can quickly go from bliss to blistered if you forget the essentials. So here’s my ultimate Yuba River day trip checklist, built from experience, too many forgotten items, and one deeply regrettable sunscreen mishap.

Water Shoes or Sandals You Can Trust

Forget the flip-flops. That rocky shoreline and sneaky current will eat them alive. Look for a good pair of grippy river shoes (like these). They protect your feet, help you keep your balance, and won’t float off when you least expect it.

A Solid Waterproof Bag

Phones, keys, snacks—nothing kills the vibe faster than soggy electronics or a granola bar that now resembles oatmeal. A dry bag (like this roll-top one) is worth its weight in gold.

Shade Supplies

There’s no shame in bringing a little comfort to the great outdoors. A compact umbrella or pop-up canopy can save your skin (literally) when shade is scarce.

Sunblock & Bug Spray You’ll Actually Use

Yes, yes, we all know we should reapply every 90 minutes—but do we? Probably not. I keep a spray-on mineral sunscreen in my bag because it’s fast, and the kids don’t hate it. Don’t forget the bug spray, especially later in the day when those sneaky mosquitoes show up uninvited.

Snacks, Snacks, and More Snacks

If you’re bringing kids, triple your snack stash. If you’re not bringing kids, double it anyway. Being outside in the sun makes everyone ravenous. Pack reusable snack bags and thank me later.

Trash Bags (Because We’re Not Trashy)

Pack it in, pack it out. Keep an extra bag on hand for wrappers, wet clothes, or anything else you don’t want loose in your car on the ride home. These biodegradable trash bags are good for the environment and the perfect size for river days.

The Yuba is a true local gem, but like any nature spot, it’s best enjoyed with a bit of planning. A little prep goes a long way toward turning a spontaneous trip into a smooth and stress-free day.

And if you’re headed out this weekend? Take the list, grab your gear, and don’t forget your water bottle! Nevada County sunshine waits for no one.
